Matia is an abstract figurative artist based in Richmond, BC. Born and raised in Iran, she began her academic path in physics, drawn to the questions and mysteries of the universe. Over time, that curiosity found a different language in art. She spent six years studying art, including drawing fundamentals, visual foundations, painting, and art history. Her practice is primarily centered on acrylic painting, though she enjoys experimenting with different materials and approaches. She is particularly interested in the tension between expressive, gestural brushwork and the quiet presence of the human figure. Her paintings often leave space for emotion, movement, and interpretation rather than telling a single, fixed story. Since 2010, Matia has exhibited her work in the Middle East and Canada. Today, she continues to develop her practice while teaching art in Richmond and West Vancouver. In her classes, she draws from her background in both art and observation to help students build a strong foundation while finding their own way of seeing and making.
